The Coverup and the Crime

19 03 2010

For all kinds of reasons, I have no interest in wading into what appears to be the Catholic Church’s umpteenth major sex scandal.  Still, I think it’s worth pointing out, noisily and often, that appeals to incidence really amount to a moral outrage when we’re talking about sexual violence against children.  The fact of the matter is that the Catholic Church is an institution which grants itself an almost unique ability to self-pardon and to insist that this absolution be received and accepted by its global constituents.  With that ability, though, comes an extraordinary responsibility to police itself, a responsibility that’s not at all met by sleazy efforts to buy off victims and advance laughable, self-pitying defenses of the man at the top.
