Via Atrios, interesting thoughts from Bruce Schneier on the problem of “nightmare scenarios.”

My general sense is that, as a culture, we’re actually quite awful at assessing actual risk, which is often complicated and difficult to effectively manage (e.g., actual health risks involved in a haphazardly policed food supply), and tend to focus much of our energy on abstract or institutional remedies to either overblown or low-incidence perils (e.g., Miranda versus Terror!).
